How to Read a Piano Scale Chart

The Layout

A standard piano keyboard repeats the same 12-note pattern (called an octave) from left to right. White keys are natural notes: C, D, E, F, G, A, B. Black keys are sharps and flats: C#/Db, D#/Eb, F#/Gb, G#/Ab, A#/Bb.

Notice that E-F and B-C have no black key between them. These are the two places in the octave where notes are only a half-step apart.

Reading Scale Patterns

Each scale is a pattern of whole steps (W = 2 frets/semitones) and half steps (H = 1 fret/semitone). The major scale follows W-W-H-W-W-W-H. The natural minor follows W-H-W-W-H-W-W.

In the visualizer above, purple keys are in the scale (lighter = white key, darker = black key) and bright violet shows the root note. Numbers inside keys show the scale degree (1, b3, 5, etc.).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a scale visualizer?

A scale visualizer shows the notes of a musical scale highlighted on a piano keyboard diagram. It helps you see which keys to play for any scale in any root key, making it easier to understand scale patterns visually rather than memorizing note names or formulas.

How do I read a piano scale chart?

Highlighted keys show which notes belong to the scale. The root note (tonic) is shown in bright violet. White keys are natural notes (C D E F G A B). Black keys are sharps and flats (C# D# F# G# A#). The numbers inside highlighted keys show scale degrees (1 = root, b3 = minor third, 5 = perfect fifth, etc.).

What is the difference between major and minor scales on piano?

Major scales follow W-W-H-W-W-W-H (whole and half steps). Minor scales follow W-H-W-W-H-W-W. The third note is the key difference: major has a major third (4 semitones from root) while minor has a minor third (3 semitones). C major uses all white keys. A natural minor also uses all white keys but starts on A. Try both in the visualizer to see the difference.

Which scales are best for producers and beatmakers?

For hip-hop and trap: minor pentatonic and natural minor are safe choices. For lo-fi: Dorian mode or major pentatonic. For house and electronic: Mixolydian or major. For R&B and neo-soul: Dorian or melodic minor. For blues and rock: blues scale or minor pentatonic. Use the visualizer to explore any of these in your track's key.
